Signs are one of the three product families of the cluster on labels, signs and cards: like web-to-print for product labels, a sign is a known product with a short list of options, and the customer designs it online instead of by email. The sign version adds sizes in feet, materials made for outdoors, and lettering that has a front and a side.
This article covers what a sign customer chooses online, how to price each kind of sign, the 3D text effect that Printcart built for sign letters, and sign businesses whose ordering runs on a Printcart build. The card version of the same model, with guest lists and delivery choices, is in web-to-print for invitations and greeting cards, and boxes add a dieline and a 3D preview before the proof in web-to-print for packaging.
Why do businesses order custom signs online?
Businesses order custom signs online because a sign is a standard product with a few choices, shape, material, size, colour and style, which a web-to-print store can present as options with a live preview. Customized sign printing has become a trend: print service providers that sell signs online need a web-to-print solution with an integrated sign designer that is easy to manage.
Signs are an integral part of everyday life. As a person looks around they are continually visually stimulated by the sight of signs. A sign is a method of display that is used to identify, advertise or communicate a place of business, a product, a command, a warning, or a direction. They are important by not only being a means of communication, but work as guidance, show instruction, and provide the needed information to make a decision or steer away from danger.
Signs have a lot of value. It is essentially the call for public attention which helps to draw potential customers. Customized signage makes the first impression and can indicate the type of business a person is about to engage with. An eye-catching office sign may get a consumer to stop in; a colorful and vibrant lobby sign may change a person's mood. The Wikipedia article on signage traces the same uses, from wayfinding to advertising.
What does a sign customer choose online?
A sign customer chooses the sign type, then its size, material and quantity, then designs it or uploads artwork, and previews the result before checkout. Many sign printing websites let users create signs in different shapes, materials, sizes, colours and styles, while the back office lets the store owner control pricing based on unique custom options and features.

The Printcart design tool is made to be as simple as possible while including the options needed to create a memorable sign. With a simple editor page, the admin creates templates and adds custom fonts, images and clipart as needed; the design templates and cliparts page shows how. Customers complete a design in a couple of clicks: choose a background, select the sign options and design the sign online in minutes. Before checking out, they see the design in preview mode and make changes before printing if needed. The Printcart banner templates are made for trade shows, storefronts and roll-up stands, where wide formats and big type matter.
How much text should a sign carry?
A sign should carry only the text a passer-by needs to act: the business name, what it offers, and key information such as the phone number and opening hours. Text is the most important part of a sign, and sometimes less is more, especially when space is limited, so the amount of text decides the layout of the whole sign.
Even with large signs, you do not always want to fill the whole space. While you want to fill the space, you also don't want to overcrowd the sign area. It's important to show your key business information, such as phone number and hours of operation, but any additional information can be saved for a different sign. A sign designer helps here by starting the customer from a template whose text sizes already suit the sign size.
How did Printcart add a 3D text effect for sign letters?
Printcart added a 3D text effect for sign letters by giving the Printcart designer two colour pickers, one for the front of a letter and one for its side, and making the effect an option the admin switches on per product. It was built for Ion Multistore, a Printcart partner that sold signs among many personalized products.
The 3D text provides a sense of realism that 2D typography just can't match. Desktop design software like Photoshop or Illustrator lets you create photo effects and text effects, from simple to advanced makeovers. But not every online designer plugin allows you to do that.
Ion Multistore, a Printcart partner in Brazil, owned a website that provided personalized and copyrighted products. It had a portfolio of more than one hundred product options for new companies to explore the digital sector. These products included signs, signboards, cell phone covers, sneakers, mugs and stationery, among other things.
Ion Multistore purchased the Printcart print shop solution for its printing business and asked about adding a 3D effect for text into the online design tool, to make the text outstanding. The text would have a side colour and a font colour, and consumers could change the colour of both. After the Printcart developers built it, the designer showed front and side colour pickers next to the font and size controls, used to set up a real sign design ("ILUMINAÇÃO CASAMOR"). In the backend, the admin chooses which colours can be used for each product.

There are 4 types of sign letters: channel letter, resin letter, acrylic letter and block letter. Only the first three can have different front and side colours; block letters use one colour for both. The difference follows how the letters are made: the sides of a channel letter, called returns, are a separate strip of aluminium bent around the back of the letter. Changes of this kind to the designer are part of the Printcart product designer features development service.
The workflow chart of the project shows the whole order, from the customer's design to the admin's approval:

A sign store should price standard banners as fixed variations, signs in any size by a rule on the area, and installed or illuminated signs by quote. The demo store's vinyl banners use the first model: each of the 6 size and material combinations has its own price. Sign letters with options per letter fit a rule, because each option adds to the price.
| If the sign is | Price matrix (fixed variations) | Instant price by rule | Quote | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A banner in a few standard sizes and materials | FitsUse it | Possible | Not needed | Every size and material combination gets its own price, as the vinyl banners of the Printcart demo do. |
| A banner or panel in any size the customer types | Too many variations | FitsUse it: price by area | For sizes beyond the press | One rule per square foot or metre prices any size within the limits the printer sets. |
| Sign letters with options per letter (colours, effects) | Multiplies variations | FitsUse it: options add to the price | For very large letters | The admin prices each custom option, as in the store built for Ion Multistore. |
| An illuminated or installed sign | Not practical | Only for the sign itself | FitsUse it | Wiring, mounting and site measurements differ for every job, so the price follows a request. |
The three models, and when a store mixes them, are compared in price matrix, instant price or quote; the printing options and pricing page shows how a Printcart store sets a price for each option. For a sign store with many products, how to price print products online covers the costs behind each price.

Why does signage still matter to a business?
Signage still matters because it directs and connects people: a sign can be personalized to appeal to a particular group of people or a certain affiliation, and creative, innovative signage can use technology without being pretentious or unobtainable. Technology isn't a trend, but the result of progress and a propeller of progress, and online sign design is part of that progress.
Everyone in every demographic wants to be recognized or considered. More than ever before, signage and branding can direct and connect people. When this article was first published, the Printcart team had more than 9 years of experience in this industry. A business that wants to start a customized sign design business, or to grow its reach, can begin with the online product designer on its sign products and add effects such as the 3D text when its letters need them.
Frequently asked questions
What can a customer do on a sign printing website?
A customer can create a sign in different shapes, materials, sizes, colours and styles, start from a template or upload a design, preview it before checkout, then order and follow the order status by email until the sign is printed and delivered.
What can store admins configure for sign products?
From the back office, admins set up templates, custom fonts, images and clipart, the colours allowed for each product, and pricing based on custom options and features. They also check each order and approve it for print or reject it back to the customer.
What is the 3D text effect feature for sign letters?
An optional feature of the Printcart designer that adds a separate front colour and side colour to sign lettering. It is available for channel, resin and acrylic letters; block letters use one colour for both front and side. It is switched on per product.
Who is Ion Multistore?
A Printcart partner in Brazil that sold personalized and copyrighted products, including signs, signboards, phone covers, sneakers, mugs and stationery. It bought the Printcart print shop solution and asked for the 3D text effect for sign letters.
What are channel letters?
Channel letters are custom-made metal or plastic letters used in exterior signage on commercial buildings, often lit from inside. Their sides, called returns, are formed from a strip of aluminium bent around the back of the letter, which is why a designer shows a front and a side colour.
Can a sign store accept any size the customer types?
Yes, if the store prices by rule instead of by fixed variation: the price follows the area of the sign within the limits the printer sets. A store with a few standard banner sizes can keep a fixed price for each size and material.
