Business Card Store Teardown: Options, Price Matrix and Proof

A business card printing website needs a short list of card types, a price for every size, paper and quantity combination, a design or upload step and a proof before printing. The Printcart print shop demo store covers this with five cards and 31 priced variations; this teardown counts them and shows where the proof happens.

Key takeaways

  • The Printcart business card demo has five cards and 31 priced variations; each card's count is its sizes times papers times quantities.
  • Paper never changes the sample price in the demo: 31 variations carry only 17 price points, set by card type and quantity.
  • The design step is a per-product switch: in the demo it is on for Standard Business Cards only.
  • A business card order passes three checks before printing: the customer's artwork review, your file review and the proof decision.
  • When a choice does not change the price, an option rule keeps the price list shorter than a full matrix of variations.

The case

  1. Context

The Printcart print shop demo store has a Business Cards category: five sample cards, from standard to folded tent, sold with size, paper and quantity options on WooCommerce and the Printcart plugin.

  2. Problem

A business card shop has to price every combination a customer can pick, put a design or upload step on the product page and get an approved file before printing, without a price list that grows out of control.

  3. How it was done in Printcart

Each card is a WooCommerce variable product: one size, up to three papers and three or four quantities, each combination with its own sample price. The Printcart designer opens from the product page, and file review and proof approval run in the Printcart dashboard.

  4. Result

Five cards and 31 priced variations, counted from the live demo on 2026-10-20. The designer is switched on for one of the five cards, Standard Business Cards; the demo marks every price as a sample.

A business card is the smallest print job most shops sell, and one of the most compared online, so its store has to be quick: pick a card, pick the options, see the price, design, done. This teardown takes the Business Cards category of the Printcart print shop demo store apart, one of the product types in the web-to-print for product labels cluster on cards, labels, signs and packaging, and counts what is behind each page.

Everything below was read from the public demo on 2026-10-20. The demo marks its prices as samples, so the numbers show how the store is built, not what anyone charges.

What does the Printcart business card demo store sell?

The Printcart business card demo store sells five sample cards in one category of the WordPress print shop store: Standard, Rounded-Corner, Premium Spot-UV, Pearl Shimmer and Folded Tent business cards. Each card is a WooCommerce variable product priced by size, paper and quantity, and the category page shows a price range for each, with a price filter in the sidebar.

The business card printing store is the same store as the WordPress print shop store, with the business card catalogue in front; the rest of the catalogue holds letterheads, envelopes, flyers and postcards to sell alongside the cards. A customer cannot add a card to the cart from the category page: every button says Select options, because a business card has no price until its options are chosen.

How many option combinations does each business card have?

Each business card in the Printcart demo has as many priced combinations as its number of sizes times papers times quantities, and every combination is one WooCommerce variation with its own price. The five cards add up to 31 variations: 12 for Standard, 6 each for Rounded-Corner and Premium Spot-UV, 4 for Pearl Shimmer and 3 for Folded Tent.

The counting rule is the useful part. The WooCommerce documentation on variable products describes each variation as a combination of attributes with its own price, so the number to maintain is always the product of the choices. Adding one more paper to Standard makes 16 variations; adding a second size doubles it to 32. That is the point where a list of variations stops being the easy option.

What does the price matrix of the demo cards show?

The price matrix of the demo cards shows that only two choices move the price: the card type and the quantity. Paper never changes the sample price, so the 31 variations carry just 17 price points. Standard cards cost the same in matte, glossy or uncoated, and the two Spot-UV papers share one price per quantity.

Two lessons follow for a real store. First, quantity breaks do the pricing work: the price per card falls as the run grows, because set-up is paid once per job. Second, a choice that never changes the price does not need its own variations. Paper could be an option without a surcharge, and finishes such as rounded corners could be options with an extra price, as the printing options and pricing feature describes. The guide on how to price print products online builds such a matrix step by step, and instant price, price matrix or quote explains when each model fits.

Where does the design step sit on the product page?

The design step sits under the options on the product page: the customer chooses size, paper and quantity, sees the price of that variation, then clicks Start design to open the Printcart designer or uploads a finished file. On the demo, this step is switched on for one card, Standard Business Cards; the other four sell their options without a design step.

The order of the page matters. Options come first, so the price is known before the customer spends time on a design. The page then offers two routes: Start design, which opens the Printcart designer with text presets for the card front, and Upload file, for customers who arrive with artwork from their own designer. Both routes end at a "Your artwork" step that asks the customer to review the generated artwork before the card goes into the cart.

The designer is a per-product switch in the Printcart plugin. A shop that sells only to customers with finished files can leave it off; a shop that sells to small businesses without a designer should turn it on for every card and add templates, which is the work of a template pack.

How does a business card order reach an approved proof?

A business card order reaches an approved proof in three checks. The customer reviews the generated artwork on the product page; your team accepts or declines the file in the Printcart dashboard, with a reason the buyer receives; and the proof is shared for a decision, either with the customer alone or with a review team from the customer's company.

  1. Choose a card and its options. Size, paper and quantity select one variation and its price.
  2. Design or upload. The Printcart designer or an uploaded file produces the artwork for the order.
  3. Review the artwork. The customer checks the result before adding it to the cart.
  4. Review the file. In the order, Accept file approves the artwork; Decline asks for a new file with a reason, as described in the Printcart tutorial on reviewing uploaded files.
  5. Decide on the proof. Approvers approve or ask for changes; production starts from the approved version.

For a single buyer the proof is a formality that protects both sides. For a company ordering cards for twenty people, the proof is where names and titles are caught, which is why the proof approval feature lets you choose who must approve. The proof approval workflow article covers the approval rules in detail.

What would you change before selling business cards on this store?

Before selling business cards on this store, a shop would replace the sample prices with its own, turn the designer on for every card it wants customers to personalise, and decide which choices are variations and which are options. These are settings in WooCommerce and the Printcart plugin, not code; the demo is a starting catalogue, not a finished price list.

  • Your own prices and quantities. Keep the quantities your press runs economically; the demo's 50 to 1,000 are examples.
  • The design step on every card. Turn it on per product and add templates, so a customer without artwork can still order.
  • Options instead of repeated variations. Paper without a surcharge, and finishes with one, keep the matrix small.
  • A proof rule. Decide who approves company orders before the first one arrives.
  • Related products. Letterheads and envelopes already sit in the same catalogue; packaging, covered in web-to-print for packaging, needs a different flow with dielines and 3D previews.

Greeting cards and invitations follow the same pattern with more sizes and papers; the guide to web-to-print for invitations and greeting cards covers what changes.

Frequently asked questions

How many business card products should a new print store start with?

Start with the cards you can print well and price today, then add more. The Printcart demo store shows five, from a standard card to a folded tent card, which covers everyday, premium and folded formats. Each new card adds its own sizes, papers and quantities to price and to keep up to date.

Are the prices in the Printcart demo store real prices?

No. The demo store shows a notice that orders are not processed and prices are samples. They show how a price matrix works, not what Printcart or any printer charges. A real store replaces them with its own prices in WooCommerce before it opens.

Can customers upload their own business card design instead of using the designer?

Yes. The Standard Business Cards page of the demo has a Start design button for the Printcart designer and an Upload file step for a finished design. The uploaded file travels with the order, and your team accepts or declines it in the Printcart dashboard before the proof.

Which Printcart package includes the business card printing store?

The business card printing store is the WordPress print shop store with its business card catalogue in front, sold as the Store package at USD 799 a year. Ten of your own products are set up by the Printcart team as part of the package.

Should rounded corners or spot UV be separate products or options?

The demo sells them as separate products, each with its own page and price range, which keeps every page simple. If most of your cards can take the same finish, an option with an extra price is easier to maintain than a second product with its own matrix of variations.
