A Brief History of Printing: From Woodblock to Digital

How did printing begin in ancient China?

Woodblock printing is the earliest known form of printing. It originated in China and was used from around the 7th century onward, during the Tang and Song dynasties, to carve text and images into wood blocks for mass reproduction of literature. Around 1040 AD, Bi Sheng is credited with inventing movable type, an early step toward faster typesetting. The technique later spread to Japan and Korea, where it took on regional styles, including Japan's Ukiyo-e art.

What did the Gutenberg press change?

Johannes Gutenberg built his press in the mid-15th century by combining movable metal type, oil-based ink and a wooden screw press that applied pressure to transfer ink from type to paper. Before this, books were copied by hand, which made them scarce and expensive. Gutenberg's press made books cheaper and more widely available, which fed rising literacy and the spread of ideas, including scientific discoveries and newspapers.

William Caxton introduced the printing press to England, printing the country's first English-language book and later setting up England's first press.

How did printing become an industrial process?

Printing scaled up over the 18th to 20th centuries through a series of mechanical advances: lithography in the late 18th century, rotary presses in the 19th century that increased print speeds and lowered costs, and offset printing in the early 20th century, which became the dominant method for high-quality, large-scale print runs.

How does digital printing differ from earlier methods?

Digital printing, which became widespread in the late 20th century, prints directly from digital files using inkjet and laser technology. Unlike the mass-production methods that came before it, digital printing does not need plates or blocks to be set up in advance, so it supports on-demand, short print runs and customization. 3D printing has since extended that same flexibility to physical objects, with uses that range from manufacturing to medicine.
