Requirements
- A Shopify store on a plan that allows apps
- The Printcart app from the Shopify App Store and a Printcart account
- For a headless storefront: developers, the Shopify Storefront API and the Printcart Design Tool SDK
Key takeaways
- The Printcart app for Shopify adds the designer to product pages and syncs every order, with its design, to Printcart.
- A Shopify order webhook tells Printcart about each order, and Printcart generates a print-ready PDF for each order line.
- The public app is the recommended install; a private app with your own credentials is the alternative for custom set-ups.
- A headless Shopify storefront has no theme for the app to sit in, so the designer is embedded with the Printcart Design Tool SDK.
- Set up the Shopify store first: products, payments, shipping and legal pages, then add Printcart and test one real order.

Shopify sells fixed products well, but a custom print product needs a designer on the product page and a print file behind every order. Printcart adds both through its Shopify app, and through its API when the store is headless. This article applies the decision in print API integration or an app to Shopify.
What does Shopify offer a print store?
Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform that gives a print store its storefront, checkout, payments, shipping settings and app ecosystem, without hosting or code. What it does not include is a product designer or print-ready files: a standard Shopify product has images and variants, not a canvas where the customer places text and artwork inside a print area.
The parts of Shopify that matter most for a print store are:
- Themes that can be customised to match a brand, without extensive coding.
- Built-in payments with Shopify Payments and other gateways such as PayPal and Stripe.
- Scalability, from a first product to a large catalogue and more sales channels.
- Mobile-ready storefronts, since many customers browse and buy on a phone.
- The Shopify App Store, where the Printcart app adds the designer.
- SEO and marketing tools, plus support, documentation and a large community.
When is the Printcart app for Shopify enough?
The Printcart app for Shopify is enough whenever the store runs on a Shopify theme and the goal is to let customers personalise products before they order. The app adds the product designer to product pages and keeps every order, with its design, synced back into Printcart, so production always has the print-ready file that matches what the buyer approved.
Printcart describes the order flow on Shopify in four moves, shown below. Nothing in this path needs code: the designer, the order sync and the webhooks are connected when the product is published.

| Uses a Shopify theme and sells customisable products | FitsDesigner, order sync and webhooks | More set-up than you need | Far more build and running cost | The app is the recommended install. |

For the store itself, Printcart offers a Shopify print shop store, built with you as a project, and the Shopify T-shirt store, the Printcart Theme for Shopify with an apparel preset and a product page block for the Printcart app.
When does a Shopify store need the Printcart API?
A Shopify store needs the Printcart API when it is headless, or when it has to send order data somewhere the app does not reach. A headless store separates the frontend from Shopify's backend: you build the frontend, and Shopify's APIs handle the commerce underneath. With no Shopify theme, there is no theme block for the Printcart app, so the designer is embedded by code.
Shopify's headless documentation says when to consider it: a storefront experience that themes and apps cannot support, Shopify commerce added to infrastructure you already have, channels Shopify does not support out of the box, or a CMS that runs your content. It also says that a headless storefront costs more to build and run than a theme. The Storefront API then serves products, collections, search and the cart, and hands customers off to checkout.
On the Printcart side, the Design Tool SDK opens the designer for a product with your public unauth token, on any page you control. The saved design becomes a Printcart project, and your server asks for the print-ready PDF and listens to webhooks, as the pillar article describes. Printcart builds this kind of storefront as a custom theme or headless storefront integration.
| Route | How you connect | What you build | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public app | Add the Printcart app from the Shopify App Store and approve its scopes | Nothing: designer, order sync and webhooks come with it | Most theme-based stores |
| Private app | Create an app in Shopify Admin (Settings, Apps and sales channels, Develop apps) and use your Sid, Secret and Unauth Token | Nothing beyond the credentials | Stores that need their own credentials |
| Headless | Shopify Storefront API for the shop, Printcart REST API and Design Tool SDK for design and files | The product page, cart and your server-side calls | Custom frontends and channels |
How do you set up a Shopify store before adding Printcart?
Set up the Shopify store before adding Printcart, so the designer lands on products that already sell, pay and ship correctly. The eight steps below are the order that works; each takes one session in the Shopify admin, and the last one is a full test before the password comes off.
- Sign up for a Shopify account with your email, a strong password and a store name customers will remember.
- Configure your store details: the business name as on your legal documents, the business address for tax purposes, and the type of products you sell.
- Customise your theme: choose a theme, adjust colours, typography and layout, and upload your logo and brand assets.
- Add products under Products: a clear name, a description, the price, good images from several angles, and variants such as size, colour or material.
- Set up a payment gateway under Settings, Payments, for example Shopify Payments, PayPal or Stripe.
- Configure shipping under Settings, Shipping and delivery: shipping zones for the regions you serve and a rate for each.
- Add legal pages: a privacy policy, terms and conditions and your returns policy, starting from Shopify's templates, linked in the footer.
- Test and launch: run the checkout, payment and navigation on phone and desktop, then turn off password protection under Online Store, Preferences.
How do you add the Printcart design tool to Shopify?
Add the Printcart design tool to Shopify in three steps: install the Printcart app from the Shopify App Store and connect your Printcart account, set up a product by linking it to its Printcart printing option or importing one from the template library, then publish it. The video below shows each screen; the Printcart tutorial for Shopify covers the details.
Two settings decide what the customer sees. The design area is the printable zone: you upload an image that represents the product, align the area on it and enter its size. On the store, the configured product then shows a Start Design button that opens the Printcart designer, and the finished design is displayed on the product page.
Orders are managed in the Shopify admin as usual, and in the Printcart dashboard, where the print-ready PDF of each design is ready for production. Before promoting the store, place one real order from start to finish to confirm the file reaches whoever prints it. The Printcart team also does this set-up as a service, the Printcart setup for Shopify.
What should you check after going live?
After going live, check that every customisable product opens the designer, that each paid order shows up in Printcart with its design and options, and that the print-ready PDF matches what the buyer approved. Then review the first real orders and fix the steps that caused rework, such as a design area that is too large for the print method.
The same checks apply to a Wix store, covered in Printcart on Wix. When customers start asking where their order is, customer service for print orders shows how order status, proofs and tickets fit together.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add the Printcart design tool to my Shopify store?
Open the Shopify App Store, search for Printcart and add the app, then connect it to your Printcart account. Link each product to its Printcart printing option or import one from the template library, and publish it with the designer already connected.
What is a design area in Printcart?
A design area is the printable zone of a product. You upload an image that represents the product, align the area on it and fill in its size, so the customer's design stays inside what can actually be printed.
When does a Shopify order sync to Printcart?
When a buyer pays for a personalised product, a Shopify order webhook notifies Printcart. The design and every chosen option travel with the order line, and Printcart generates a print-ready PDF for each line so production can start.
Can I run another Printcart solution next to the Shopify app?
Each store connects one Printcart solution at a time. Printcart's three-plugins guideline on www.printcart.com explains why, and which options you have when you want to combine several Printcart solutions for one business.
Does a headless Shopify store cost more than a theme?
Yes. Shopify's own documentation says a headless storefront costs more to build and run than a theme, and that the merchant needs developers to maintain it after launch, so it fits only when themes and apps cannot deliver the experience.
