Web-to-print SaaS: web-to-print software that the vendor hosts and runs in its cloud, which a print business uses through a browser or an API for a subscription.
- Also called
- cloud web-to-print, hosted web-to-print, SaaS web2print
- Not to be confused with
- installed (self-hosted) web-to-print software, print-on-demand, a business model
Key takeaways
- With web-to-print SaaS, the vendor runs the software on its own cloud infrastructure and the print business uses it through a browser or an API.
- Cloud printing in web-to-print means the print files are rendered and kept online, so staff can open them from any browser.
- Automation replaces the manual hand-offs between storefront and production: one order list, file approval and notifications.
- AI services and an API extend a SaaS platform; work specific to one business, such as an ERP connection, is quoted as a project.

How is SaaS different from installed web-to-print software?
With installed web-to-print software, the print business runs the application on servers it pays for and handles hosting and upgrades itself. With SaaS, the vendor runs the application in its cloud and the business uses it through a browser or an API. The vendor updates the hosted part; a plugin on the shop's own store stays the shop's to update.
Both deliver the same thing to customers, the online ordering, design and print-ready files described in what web-to-print is; the difference is who runs the software behind it.
NIST's definition of cloud computing describes software as a service the same way: the customer uses the provider's applications running on a cloud infrastructure, reaches them through a web browser or a program interface, and does not manage the underlying network, servers, operating systems or storage. The print business still decides its products, prices and production; the hosting work moves to the vendor.
The trade-off is control. Installed software can be changed in any way the owner's developers choose, while a SaaS product changes on the vendor's schedule, and work that is specific to one business is added through the vendor's API or as a custom project.

What does cloud printing mean in web-to-print?
In web-to-print, cloud printing means the print files are made and kept online instead of on one office computer. The customer designs or uploads artwork on the storefront, the platform prepares a print-ready file, and staff open it from any browser. In the Printcart Dashboard, files export as PDF, PNG, SVG or JPG CMYK, with resolution checks.
The dashboard also shows safe-zone and bleed indicators, and buyer uploads can include contact details, so the shop can follow up on a file that needs changes before it goes to production.
How does web-to-print SaaS automate the order workflow?
Automation removes the manual hand-offs between the storefront and production. In the Printcart Dashboard, orders from every connected store arrive in one list, each with a status: pending, in review, accepted, in production or fulfilled. Notifications report new designs, saved files, order confirmations and customer uploads, so staff no longer collect artwork from emails and folders. Fewer hand-offs also mean fewer mistakes to pay for, as the article on how web-to-print cuts print costs shows.
A typical order runs like this:
- The buyer personalizes a product or uploads a file on your storefront.
- The design or upload arrives in the dashboard with the order.
- Your team approves or declines each uploaded file and downloads the print files; job submission software explains this upload, check and proof path.
- The order moves through its statuses until it is fulfilled, and webhooks can tell your own systems when a design or order changes state.

In a SaaS platform, AI tools run as a service, so a print shop installs nothing. Printcart offers AI services for file preflight, background removal, image upscaling and face crop. Each is available as a free tool and through the API, billed from the merchant's token wallet, and multi-step workflows that chain several services are built per customer.
These services check a file before it reaches production and take over repetitive file preparation, such as removing a photo background or raising the resolution of a small image. Every Printcart full store package includes the same services as its AI tools, paid with AI tokens.
How does an API connect web-to-print SaaS to other systems?
An API lets your own systems work with the platform. The Printcart Cloud API is a REST API with webhooks and SDKs: the Design Tool SDK and the Uploader SDK embed the designer on your product page, the REST API carries each design to a print-ready PDF with trim and bleed boxes, and webhooks report design and order changes.
The API Reference, both SDKs and webhooks are available on any Printcart plan; creating secret and public API keys needs the Printcart Advanced plan. Connecting an ERP, MIS or accounting system to Printcart is project work, scoped by our integration services.
How does Printcart deliver web-to-print as SaaS?
Printcart has apps for WordPress/WooCommerce, Shopify and Wix, plus the Printcart Dashboard, where orders, customer designs, uploads and print-ready files from every connected store are managed. A Free plan is available, and paid store plans are listed on www.printcart.com. Printcart is a brand of Netbase JSC, and its services are delivered remotely.
On WooCommerce the Printcart plugin and full stores run on your own WordPress host; the dashboard, print files and API are hosted by Printcart. For an overview of Printcart's web-to-print software, see the Printcart web-to-print solution. If you want a complete store instead of an app on your own store, see full web-to-print stores and their packages.
When does a print business need more than a SaaS subscription?
A subscription covers the standard product. Work that is specific to one business, such as a custom theme, a data migration, an ERP or MIS connection, or a designer feature built on the Cloud API, is quoted as a separate project. Printcart handles that work remotely with a written scope, through four kinds of service.
New features and themes are custom development; moving products, customers and orders from another system is a migration; connecting the store to an ERP, MIS or accounting system is an integration; and installing and configuring the store and its products is setup and launch. The web-to-print API article explains when an integration is worth building, and the software scorecard helps compare a subscription with the other routes before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
Is web-to-print SaaS the same as cloud printing?
Not exactly. Web-to-print SaaS is the hosted software that takes orders and customer designs, while cloud printing describes rendering and keeping the print files online. In Printcart both happen in one place: the files are prepared and stored in the Printcart Dashboard.
Do buyers need an account on the SaaS platform?
No. With Printcart, buyers never log in to the dashboard. They personalize a product or send a file on your own storefront, and the design or upload arrives in your dashboard with the order.
Which online stores can connect to Printcart?
Shopify, Wix and WooCommerce stores connect through the Printcart Cloud API, and a custom site can use the same API. Orders, designs and uploads from every connected store then arrive in one Printcart Dashboard.
What does AI web-to-print mean?
It means AI services built into the web-to-print workflow, such as print-file preflight, background removal, image upscaling and face crop. In a SaaS platform they run in the vendor's cloud, so a print shop calls them from its store or the API without installing anything.
Does web-to-print SaaS include the storefront?
Usually not. Most web-to-print SaaS connects to a storefront you already run, such as Shopify, Wix or WooCommerce. If you want the storefront too, a full store comes with the shop pages, products and web-to-print tools already set up.
Can I move from installed web-to-print software to SaaS?
Yes. Products, customers and templates are exported from the old system and imported into the new one, and old URLs are redirected. Printcart scopes this as a migration project with a written plan before any data moves.
