An overview of OpenCart, CS-Cart and PrestaShop

When it comes to open source code platforms, people usually mention to Magento or Joomla as the leaders of e-Commerce market. There are other platforms in which are born previous and later, however, their development have never outperformed the 2 leading rivals. PrestaShop, Opencart and CS-Cart are among the “others”. These players do not concern much about the real demand and the practical feature for a product so that hardly their product can satisfy the crowd.

1/ OpenCart: is a free simple and easy-to-use software, however, it is not highly recommended for a project because of some restrains.

OpenCart: A powerful open source shopping cart system…

Firstly, it’s code repetition which slow down the configuration and waste time for processing owing to an old PHP app manually for every form field.

Secondly, the database has almost no caching except from caching in the backend at certain pages but not in the front-end.

Next, the OpenCart has problems with template because it treats every single content block on a page as a module, so adding a simple element is to create a module involving many steps on both front-end and back-end.

Then, because of the below – standard version of the script, OpenCart is less developed compared to Magento or PrestaShop causing the CSS and Javascript to be downloaded at large amount.

In addition, OpenCart has troubles with script updating when some plug-ins are released. They sometimes have to face with errors or broken and take user a while to fix. By far, the system works somehow, but it seems to be out of date!

2/ CS-Cart: similar to other platforms, CS-Cart is a shopping cart solution offered for free. Currently, there are more than 30,000 stores using the CS-Cart. The CS-Cart is more appropriate for retail merchant with simple website because it do not offer as much functionality as Magento. Besides, one of the worst things from CS-Cart is the slow loading speed. Customer have to wait for product to show up, it means that they will leave the site sooner. And this is really a big problem for business. Apart from that, CS-Cart’s support system seems to receive a lot of bad reviews because of wrong solutions or slow response. Those reasons lower its ranking on the e-commerce market; however, it’s better than Opencart.

3/ PrestaShop: is a shopping cart platform with a huge online community and over 150,000 online stores; however, the number account for a minor part compared to the leading rivals. Due to the lack of responsive featurea, PrestaShop is unlikely to tap into mobile market and hardly access to one of the very explosive market share currently. Besides, though this platform is easy to customize with more than 3,500 modules and template for purchasing, the PrestaShop is not highly preferred because of un-friendly SEO which is considered as important for merchant, nowadays.

PrestaShop’s slogan “The Best E-Commerce Exprerience”.

Too much bug fix is one of the disadvantages and is painful for shop owners. Because when it comes to security problems, fix releases take a significant concern from developers and users. Bug fixes are released to everyone so it will raise the possibility of vulnerable loopholes for security system in older versions. And even the system can stop working just because of automatic updates without fixing previous bugs. This make PrestaShop look less attractive than its competitors like Magento or Virtuemart.

Generally, the PrestaShop is an affordable choice and more appropriate for small businesses or those without the ability to hire someone to handle it for them.

Ultimately, choosing the right open source platform for a business does not completely depend on how powerful or popular they are, it should be what the best fitting option to your situation is!
