How to Build an Online Design Tool Like Canva

To build an online design tool like Canva, start from a product designer that already has templates, drag-and-drop editing, fonts and image uploads, then add what your users need. For the client Doographics, Printcart added pro templates, paid downloads, multi-colour text boxes, uploads saved to the account and front-end add and delete page buttons.

Key takeaways

  • Canva is a drag-and-drop design platform used by more than 265 million people a month by the end of 2025 (Wikipedia).
  • Printcart's product designer already covers Canva's basic features: templates, fonts, clipart, layers and user image uploads.
  • Custom development can add Canva-style features Printcart doesn't include by default, such as pro/free templates and paid design downloads.
  • Printcart added the ability to format one text box with multiple colors, fonts and sizes, matching a common Canva use case.
  • Build from scratch only when the editor itself is the product and no existing designer fits its core behaviour.

Online design tool in action: web-to-print with Printcart (video from the Printcart YouTube channel)This Printcart video shows the online design tool running on PB Print, a print store that uses it so customers personalise products on the website. Text editing, image upload and a real-time preview all happen in the browser. The video lists the uses it suits, from custom T-shirts, business cards and stickers to photo gifts and packaging, and the optional Printcart Cloud API features: AI image generation, an AI mock-up generator and background removal.

A Canva-like design tool is less of a blank-page project than it looks. The editor (templates, drag-and-drop, fonts, photos) is the part that takes longest to build, and it already exists in the online product designer that Printcart ships with every full store. What usually needs building is the business around it: which templates are paid, how downloads are charged, how pages and uploads behave. How such an editor works inside a print store, from product page to print file, is explained in what an online product designer is.

What is Canva, and why do businesses want a tool like it?

Canva is a graphic design platform with a drag-and-drop interface designed for users without professional design training, run on a freemium model. By the end of 2025 Canva reported more than 265 million monthly active users (Wikipedia, checked 2026-10-19). That reach is why many merchants want a similar tool for their own business or audience.

Canva gives users templates and a drag-and-drop interface for customising them, for anything from invitations to business cards to social media posts. A business that builds its own version usually wants the same ease of use, but tied to its own products, templates, prices and brand: a print shop wants the design to become an order, a template site wants the download to become a sale.

What does a Canva-like design tool need?

A Canva-like design tool needs an editor (canvas, text, shapes, layers), a template library, fonts and cliparts, image upload, pages, and an export or order step. On top of that, a business needs rules for accounts, paid templates and downloads. Printcart's product designer covers the editor part; the table below shows which features were core and which were custom-built.

Printcart's designer workflow is similar to Canva's: the admin can set up hundreds of templates in the store, create templates one by one or convert them from PSD files, and add fonts, images and clipart, or let visitors upload their own images from their device or social networks. Developers who want to embed the editor elsewhere can start from the design tool SDK.

How do you build a Canva-like design tool, step by step?

You build a Canva-like design tool in six steps: decide what users design, compare the features you need with an existing designer, prepare the templates and assets, specify the custom features, set the account and payment rules, and test on every device before launch. Starting from an existing product designer turns most of the work into configuration and a short list of custom features.

  1. Decide what users design. Printed products, digital graphics, or both; this decides print areas, sizes and export formats.
  2. Compare your feature list with the designer. Use the table above: mark each feature as core, custom, or not needed.
  3. Prepare templates and assets. Convert existing PSD or AI files into designer templates, and load fonts and cliparts.
  4. Specify the custom features. Write each one as a user action and a result, as in the Doographics list below.
  5. Set account and payment rules. Decide which templates are pro, what a download costs, and what a paid user can redownload.
  6. Test on every device, then launch. Check uploads, pages and downloads on desktop and phone with real accounts.

Step 3 is often the largest content job; Printcart's PSD and AI to template conversion service covers it when the templates already exist as design files.

How did Printcart build a Canva-like design tool for Doographics?

Printcart built a Canva-like design tool for Doographics by starting from its product designer and adding the features the client asked for. Doographics was a graphic design platform offering templates for Facebook posts and ads, Instagram posts, flyers, Pinterest designs and YouTube thumbnails, with custom dimensions, image cropping, background removal and a large font library.

The Doographics team found Printcart through its online product designer and wanted a design tool to build a Canva-like platform. The designer plugin supported all of Canva's basic features, but didn't fit every one of the client's specific requests out of the box. Printcart's team adjusted the plugin and developed additional features to meet those requirements, since matching everything a site like Canva does usually calls for some custom development. The features below were built by Printcart's developer team on top of the core product designer, each customised to a specific client request. Any of them, or others like them, can be requested for a custom build.

Pro Template

Printcart can mark a template as free or "pro" when the admin creates it, the same way Canva separates its templates; only paid accounts can use a pro template.

Upload Video and Export to MP4

The admin can upload videos as templates, shown in a separate video tab in the design tool's sidebar. Users can then make a new video design and download it in MP4, or upload their own (shorter) video to design with.

Background Tab

A background tab gives users three ways to set a design's background: picking a plain colour, picking an admin-defined texture image, or uploading their own image.

Pay for Download

With this feature enabled, users can't share or export a design that uses a pro template until they pay for it. The admin can turn this on or off, apply it only to completed orders, and set which file types are allowed for download.

Charging a Design Fee per Download

The admin can also set a price per downloaded design. Once a user has paid for a design, they can download it in every available format (SVG, PNG, JPG, PDF) and redownload it for free afterward, modify a paid design without an extra charge, and save an unfinished design to come back to later.

Multiple Fonts, Colors and Sizes in One Text Box

Printcart added the ability to format a single text box with several different colours, fonts or sizes at once, rather than requiring a separate text box for each style. This saves time for users who want a multi-coloured or mixed-style line of text without manually positioning several text boxes.

Image Uploads Saved to the User's Account

Originally, images a user uploaded on one device wouldn't carry over when they logged in on another device or closed the browser. Printcart connected uploaded images to the user's account instead, so they stay available in the image upload tab regardless of device, and the admin can see which images each user has uploaded from the backend dashboard.

Add and Delete Page Buttons

On Canva, users can add or remove pages directly from the front end; Printcart's designer originally only let the admin set the number of pages from the backend. Printcart added front-end add and delete page buttons so users can design multiple-page products with no limit on the number of pages, and copy a design from one page to paste onto a new blank page.

Should you build from scratch or extend an existing designer?

You should extend an existing designer when the editing itself is standard and the value lies in your templates, products and payment rules; build from scratch only when the editor's core behaviour is the product, such as real-time co-editing or a file format of your own. The matrix below matches common projects to the approach that usually fits them, including the case where Printcart is not the right base.

For print stores, the designer is only half of the page; the custom T-shirt product page checklist and how designing on the product detail page works cover the other half. A store that wants the designer with products and checkout already in place can start from the WordPress print shop store.

Is a custom Canva-like design tool right for your store?

A custom Canva-like design tool is right for a store when its customers design often, its templates are worth selling, and the standard editor already covers the way they work. Apps like Canva are popular with small business owners, social media marketers and graphic designers who want an easy way to produce their own designs; a tool of your own lets you sell to that audience under your brand.

Printcart's core product designer already covers Canva's basic feature set; building out the specific features a client needs, as with the Doographics project above, is handled through Printcart's custom product designer development service. Stores that mainly sell personalised products, rather than downloads, can read how to sell personalised products with custom text first.

Frequently asked questions

What is Canva?

Canva is a graphic design platform with a drag-and-drop interface for people without professional design training, run on a freemium model; it reported more than 265 million monthly active users by the end of 2025, according to Wikipedia.

Can Printcart build a design tool like Canva?

Yes. Printcart's product designer already covers Canva's basic features, and Printcart has built custom Canva-like platforms for clients, such as the design tool built for Doographics, by adding features on top of the core designer.

What custom features has Printcart added to match Canva?

Pro versus free templates, video template uploads with MP4 export, a background tab, paid design downloads, multi-color text in one text box, persistent image uploads, and front-end add and delete page buttons, each built for a specific client request.

Can a Printcart-powered store charge for design downloads?

Yes. The pay-for-download feature can block sharing or exporting a design that uses a pro template until payment, or charge a set fee per downloaded design, with redownloads of a paid design free afterwards.

Does Printcart's designer support multiple fonts and colors in a single text box?

It can as a custom feature: Printcart added the ability to apply several different colors, fonts or sizes within one text box, instead of requiring a separate text box for each style.

How long does it take to build a Canva-like tool?

It depends on how many features go beyond the core designer. Starting from an existing product designer means only the custom features are built and tested; building an editor from scratch adds the editor itself, which is the largest part of the work.
