How a Canvas and Wall-Art Store Works: Sizes, Edges and Wraps

A canvas print is the photo product with the most hidden decisions. The customer sees a picture on a wall; the store has to turn that into a frame size, a frame depth, an edge style and a print file that wraps around the frame without cutting off a head. What does a canvas print website need to sell?

A canvas print website needs to sell a configuration, not a picture: the customer chooses a size, a frame depth and an edge style, and uploads a photo that must fill that size. The canvas print store behind the demo is a WooCommerce store on a canvas child theme, with shop by shape, product pages, a size guide, an edge and depth guide, FAQ, cart and checkout. Each product page lists its sizes and depths as variations with a sample price, and says the rest in plain words: printed on satin canvas over a solid frame, four edge styles, colour, black and white or sepia, and a wall preview.

Which sizes, depths and edges does the demo store offer?

The Printcart canvas demo store offers each canvas in a Classic 0.75 in or Deluxe 1.5 in depth and four edge styles: Mirror Wrap, Image Wrap, Blur Wrap and Solid Color. Product pages show three or four quick sizes per shape; in the designer the customer can choose any width and height from 25 side lengths between 8 in and 72 in.

With the collage and the four gift canvases, which reuse the classic, portrait and panoramic sizes, the 12 products carry 92 size and depth variations. Edge style is not a variation: it does not change the sample price, so the designer asks for it instead of the price list.

The designer opens a much larger space. The size guide lists 25 lengths, from 8 in to 72 in, with the longest side up to 72 in and the shorter side up to 54 in. Counting 16 × 12 and 12 × 16 as one size, that gives 276 sizes with both sides up to 54 in, plus 46 with a long side of 60 or 72 in: 322 sizes. Each comes in two depths, so 644 size and depth pairs need a price, and with four edge styles a customer can order 2,576 different canvases before choosing colour, black and white or sepia. How do edge style and depth change the print file?

Edge style and depth change the print file because a canvas is printed larger than its face and wrapped around the frame. The Printcart Canvas designer draws that wrap on the canvas: on a 16 × 12 in Classic canvas each side carries a 0.75 in label, so the printed area is at least 17.5 × 13.5 in before bleed. The edge and depth guide explains the four styles to the customer:

• Mirror Wrap. The sides mirror the outer edge of the photo, so nothing important wraps around the frame; the guide calls it a safe choice for most photos.
• Image Wrap. The photo continues around the sides, using part of its outer border; important details must stay away from the border.
• Blur Wrap. The sides are a soft blur of the colours at the edge of the photo.
• Solid Color. The sides are one plain colour the customer chooses.

The same panel takes the photo. The upload accepts JPG, PNG, WEBP, SVG, TIFF and HEIC files, and a print-quality check rates the photo for the chosen size, here as Excellent. The size guide states the rule behind it: bigger sizes need a photo with more pixels, and the designer says when a photo is too small. How does the wall preview help a customer choose a size?

The wall preview helps a customer choose a size by showing the canvas to scale in a room, so a size in inches becomes something they can judge by eye. For a 16 × 12 in canvas the preview says it is shown on a wall about 13 ft (3.9 m) wide, and the small picture above the sofa makes the case for a larger size better than any size chart. The rooms are a living room, bedroom, hallway, home office, dining room and studio wall. A customer who uploads their own wall is told that the photo stays on the device and is not uploaded or saved, and the preview can be downloaded to share before ordering. What happens to a canvas order after checkout?

After checkout, every canvas order line gets a print-ready PDF sized to the canvas, with the wrap and bleed included, which the team downloads from the order screen. Orders also sync to the Printcart dashboard, so production receives one file per canvas and nobody rebuilds the photo, the wrap or the edge colour by hand.
