Product Designer Feature Checklist for a Print Store Launch

A product designer feature checklist lists what to test in the online designer of a print store before launch: print areas, templates, text and photo tools, previews, prices and the print-ready file. This 25-point version gives each check a reason, a test and a pass mark, and shows which Printcart full store package covers it.

Key takeaways

  • Test the designer as a customer, on a phone and a laptop, and finish every test with a real order and its downloaded file.
  • Print areas, bleed and a low-resolution warning prevent most reprints of personalised products.
  • Templates per best-selling product matter more than extra tools: most customers edit a design instead of starting blank.
  • Package limits decide three checks: products with the designer, monthly file downloads and storage.
  • Offer upload next to the designer, so customers with finished artwork are not forced to design online.

What should a product designer do before a print store launches?

A product designer should let a customer finish a printable design on any product in the store, on a phone or a laptop, and hand the print shop a print-ready file with the order. Before launch, that means checking 25 features in five groups: product set-up, customer tools, preview and price, output files, and package limits.

An online product designer is the browser editor on the product page where customers personalise a print product; that article explains how it works from product page to print file. This checklist is the test plan that follows: what to try in the designer of your own store, why each item matters, and what a pass looks like. It works for any designer, and the notes below say where a Printcart full store covers an item by default.

How do you run the checklist?

Run the checklist as a customer would, on your own store, before you announce the launch. Pick one product from each product family, test on a laptop and on a phone, and finish with a real test order for each product. An item passes only when the result is right in the downloaded print file, not just in the preview on screen.

  1. Pick three to five test products, one per family: for example a business card, a T-shirt, a mug and a poster. The Printcart setup guide on www.printcart.com recommends proving the flow on one representative product per family before rolling it out.
  2. Test on two devices. Use a phone, or a desktop browser switched to a phone model in its device mode; a narrow desktop window is not the same, because the shop decides what is a phone from the browser type.
  3. Write down each result in the CSV of the checklist below: pass, fail or not needed for that product.
  4. Place a test order per product and download its file from the order, then open the file at full size.
  5. Fix and retest every failed item before launch, and keep the CSV as the record of what was tested.
Checklist: 25 checks with the reason, the test and the pass mark
Number#CheckWhy it mattersHow to checkPasses when
1Print area on every product sideA design that crosses the printable region is cut off or printed on a seam.Open each side of three products and drag a text box to every edge. The element stops at the print area, or the designer warns before saving.
2Bleed and safe zone shownBackground artwork needs bleed past the trim; text needs a margin inside it.Place a full-size background and a line of text near the trim on a business card.Bleed and safe-zone lines are visible and the export includes the bleed.
3Canvas follows the chosen optionA 2 x 2 in sticker and a 4 x 4 in sticker need different canvases.Change the size option, then open the designer again. The canvas size and print area match the selected option every time.
4Front and back in one order lineTwo-sided products ordered as two items confuse production.Design both sides of a T-shirt or a business card, then check the cart. Both sides belong to one cart item and one order line.
5Templates for each best-sellerMost customers edit a ready-made design instead of starting from a blank side.List your ten best-selling products and open the designer on each. Each one offers at least a few templates sized to that product.
6Locked and editable fields on templatesBrand templates break when customers can move the logo or change fonts.Open a brand template and try to move the logo and change the font.Only the fields you opened can be edited; the rest stays locked.
7Text tools: fonts, colours, sizes, curved textNames, dates and messages are the most common personalisation.Add a name, change font, colour and size, and curve it on a mug.Every change shows at once and prints the same in the test file.
8Your own licensed fontsBrand and wedding work often needs a font the default library lacks.Upload one font you hold a licence for and use it in a design. The font shows in the designer and is embedded or outlined in the file.
9Photo upload from phone and laptopCustomers keep their photos on their phones.Upload a photo from a phone gallery and a PNG from a laptop. Both upload without errors and appear in the design.
10Low-resolution warningSmall photos print blurry and come back as complaints.Upload a 400 px photo onto an A3 poster. The designer warns the customer before the design is saved.
11Accepted file types and size limits setUnexpected formats and huge files stall production.Try a HEIC photo, a PDF and a 60 MB file.Allowed files upload; others get a clear message, not a silent failure.
12Cliparts that fit your productsGeneric clipart rarely suits business print or brand work.Search the clipart panel for three themes your customers order. Each search returns items you would sell, or you can hide the panel.
13Undo, redo and layersCustomers abandon a design after one mistake they cannot reverse.Make five edits, undo three, then move an element behind another.Undo and redo work and layer order changes as expected.
14Works on a phoneMany customers start on a phone, where small tools are hard to use.Run a full design and checkout on a phone or a phone-sized device mode. The design is finished and ordered without zooming or a desktop switch.
15Live preview on the productCustomers buy what they have seen; a flat canvas hides mistakes.Design a mug or a shirt and look at the preview before saving. The preview shows the design on the product in the chosen colour.
163D preview where it helpsWrapped and curved products look different from the flat design.Open a mug, packaging or apparel product with 3D preview on.The 3D view rotates and matches the flat design.
17Price updates with the optionsA design attached to the wrong price becomes a dispute or a loss.Change size, paper and quantity before and after designing. The price on the page matches the options in the cart.
18Upload path next to the designerCustomers with finished artwork should not be forced through the designer.Open a product as a customer who has a print-ready PDF.The product page offers both upload and design online.
19Design saved with the orderProduction needs the design attached to the order, not in an e-mail.Place a test order and open it in the admin and the dashboard. The design or upload is attached to the right order line.
20Print-ready file per orderA screenshot of the preview is not a print file.Download the file of the test order and open it at full size.Trim size plus bleed, CMYK, sharp text and the customer's exact content.
21File format your press takesEach press, RIP or cutter expects certain formats.Ask production which formats it takes and compare with the export. The export is in one of those formats without manual conversion.
22Proof step for new artworkA file can pass every check and still carry a typo.Send a proof link for the test order and approve it as the customer. The approval is recorded on the order before production starts.
23Products with the designer liveThe package caps how many products show the designer at once.Count the products that need the designer in your first year. The count fits the package: 100, 1,000 or no limit.
24File downloads and storage fit your volumeOrder files and designs use monthly downloads and storage.Estimate monthly orders with designs and their average file size.Expected downloads and storage stay inside the package limits.
25End-to-end test orderEach check above can pass while the whole path fails.Order one product per family from product page to downloaded file.Every test order reaches production with the right file and price.

Which checks matter most for which product?

The checks that matter most depend on the product, because each product family fails in its own way. Business cards fail on bleed and small text, apparel on print area and colour, photo products on resolution, and brand templates on locked fields. Run all 25 items once, then repeat the ones in the table below every time you add a product of that family.

The checks to repeat for each product family
Product familyChecks to repeatTypical failure
Business cards and stationeryBleed and safe zone, canvas follows the option, front and backText too close to the trim, white edge after cutting
T-shirts and apparelPrint area per side, live preview, front and backDesign placed over a seam or too large for a small size
Mugs and wrapped products3D preview, print area, canvas follows the optionDesign covered by the handle or cut at the wrap
Posters and canvas printsLow-resolution warning, file types, print-ready filePhone photo enlarged beyond what it can print
Brand templates for business clientsLocked fields, your own fonts, proof stepLogo moved or font changed by a local team

The custom T-shirt product page checklist covers apparel in more depth, from the product photos to the order, and the guide to selling personalised products with custom text covers the text tools for gifts and stationery.

Printcart online designer: personalise and preview products live on your store (video from the Printcart YouTube channel)This Printcart video shows customers designing custom products such as T-shirts, mugs, business cards and invitations directly on a WooCommerce store with the Printcart online designer. The editor works by drag and drop, fits phone screens and shows real-time 2D and 3D previews of the design on the product. For production, the designer generates print-ready files in PDF, PNG, SVG and JPG, so the print shop receives a file with each order instead of rebuilding the design.

Which items come with each Printcart package?

Every Printcart full store package includes the online product designer on the product page, premium templates, cliparts and fonts, 3D and canvas edge previews, and print-ready files with every order. The packages differ in limits: how many products show the designer, how many order files you download a month and how much storage designs get.

Three items of the checklist depend on the package rather than on set-up. Products with the designer live are 100 on Store, 1,000 on Store B2B and Store Marketplace, and no limit on Enterprise; you switch the designer on per product. Order file downloads, the customer uploads and personalised order files you download from your dashboard, are 500 a month, 5,000 a month or no limit, and cloud storage for designs and order files is 5 GB, 50 GB or 200 GB. Customers are never blocked by these limits: they can always buy, upload and request quotes; the limits apply to what the shop sees and downloads.

Two items need more than the Store package. A brand media and template library, which keeps each business client's media and templates ready for its orders, comes with Store B2B, Store Marketplace and Enterprise. Serving the designer and design assets from your own domain comes with Enterprise.

What fails most often in a launch test?

Three failures cause most reprints of personalised products: low-resolution uploads, text that does not fit the print area, and a preview that does not match the produced file. The Printcart setup guide on www.printcart.com names the same three. Each one is caught by the checklist, but only when the test goes all the way to the downloaded file.

  • Low-resolution uploads. A photo that looks sharp on a phone screen can be far too small for a poster. A resolution warning at upload, item 10, lets the customer choose a better photo before ordering; the DPI article explains the numbers.
  • Text outside the print area. Long names and messages overflow small products. Print areas and safe zones, items 1 and 2, keep text inside; capping the text length on templates helps too.
  • Preview and file disagree. Fonts that are not embedded, colours that shift from RGB to CMYK, or a missing bleed only show in the file. Items 20 and 21 catch them; the file formats article explains what to ask for.

What should you do when an item fails?

When an item fails, decide whether the fix is a setting, a template or a missing feature. Most failures are settings: a print area drawn too large, an upload rule not set, a template without bleed. Fix those per product and retest.

A price check that fails, item 17, often means the product needs another pricing model; the comparison of instant price, price matrix and quote shows which one fits. A missing feature is different: it needs another package, an app, or custom work on the designer.

For settings and templates, the Printcart team sets up your first 10, 30 or 50 products in the first year, depending on the package, and builds template packs and clipart libraries as a quoted design service. For features the designer lacks, such as a special tool for one product family, custom development on the Printcart designer is quoted before work starts. When the gap is the starting point rather than a tool, the comparison of templates, customer upload and blank canvas helps choose the flow per product.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to run the 25 checks?

Plan about one working day for three to five test products, including the test orders and opening each print file. Most of the time goes into fixing what fails, such as print areas drawn too large or templates without bleed, and testing those products again before launch.

Do I need every item on the checklist?

No. Mark an item as not needed when it does not apply to your products: a store that sells only one-sided flyers does not need the front-and-back check, and a stationery shop may hide cliparts. Keep the print area, resolution, price and print-file checks for every product.

Who should run the checklist?

Someone who did not set up the products, ideally with a person from production. The set-up person knows the shortcuts and misses what confuses a customer, while production knows which file problems stop a press. One runs the customer side, the other opens the files.

Can I download the checklist?

Yes. The Download CSV button under the checklist table gives the 25 rows with the item, why it matters, how to test it and the pass mark. Open it in a spreadsheet, add a result column per product and keep it as the record of the launch test.

Does the checklist work for the Printcart apps on Shopify or Wix?

Yes. The checks test what the customer and the print shop see, not the platform underneath. Items about package limits apply to Printcart full stores; on an app, compare them with the limits of the Printcart plan connected to your store.
