Key takeaways
- Printess is an editor only: it plugs into Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and other shops but offers no website, cart or payment gateway of its own.
- Printess bills per order credit, and one credit covers a document of up to 4 pages, so long photobooks use several credits.
- Customer's Canvas publishes no price list on its site; it offers APIs, SDKs, cloud or on-premises deployment and a 30-day trial on request.
- PitchPrint lists monthly plans billed annually with a set number of free projects, then a usage fee per completed project.
- Printcart adds its designer to Shopify, Wix and WooCommerce stores, with a separate photobook plugin for WooCommerce (in build).

What is Printess, and why look for an alternative?
Printess is a cloud-based web-to-print design tool that adds a personalisation editor to an existing e-commerce store, built for photo products, photobooks, greeting cards and calendars. Businesses look for a Printess alternative when they want a different pricing model, an editor that comes with a store, on-premises deployment, or a tool aimed at their own product range.
Printess's pricing page answers the basics in its FAQ: it works through an existing shop as an iFrame or plugin, it does not offer a website, payment gateway or shopping cart, and it outputs PDF, JPG, PNG and TIFF with CMYK, spot colours and die-cut lines. The same page says a store can have Printess live within 30 to 60 days, depending on its products and team, and that you must be a business to use the service.
Its shop integration page names Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, be.print, Shopware, Infigo, PrintshopCreator and Amazon, and a headless editor for teams that build their own interface. For books, Printess shows Magic Photobook, which uses AI to select photos, group them into a story and lay out the pages.
This comparison covers three alternatives for print product editors: Customer's Canvas, PitchPrint and Printcart. For WooCommerce stores leaving a plugin, see Fancy Product Designer and Lumise alternatives.
Which criteria matter in a print product editor?
A print product editor is judged by four things: whether it plugs into the shop you already run, whether it handles your products (single sheets, multi-page books, wrap-around items), the print file it sends to production, and how its price grows with your orders. Photobook and calendar sellers should add page handling, because a 40-page book and a business card place very different loads on an editor.
Shop fit. An editor-only tool such as Printess or Customer's Canvas needs a store and a team to connect it. Store apps such as PitchPrint and Printcart install into Shopify or WooCommerce directly.
Products and pages. An online product designer for apparel places a design on a print area; a book editor lays out spreads, a spine and covers, as what a photobook editor needs explains. Check how each tool treats page count in its price, too.
The print file. The print-ready file decides what your press receives: format, colour mode, bleed and, for books, the spine.
Templates. Most photobook and card businesses sell from templates. Ask how templates are built (in the editor's own backend, from InDesign files, or by your designers) and who maintains them; Printcart's design templates and cliparts page shows how templates work in its designer.
How do Customer's Canvas, PitchPrint and Printcart differ from Printess?
Customer's Canvas, PitchPrint and Printcart differ from Printess mainly in who they are built for. Customer's Canvas is an API-first platform for companies with developers; PitchPrint is a store plugin for print shops with fixed monthly plans; Printcart adds a designer to Shopify, Wix and WooCommerce stores and has a separate photobook plugin (in build). Printess sits between them: an editor-only service billed per order.
Customer's Canvas
Customer's Canvas describes itself as infrastructure for product customization: embedded editors, APIs and rendering for print products, apparel, promo items, packaging and marketing materials, with integrations for Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and Order Desk. Its platform page lists print-ready PDFs and JPEG, PNG or TIFF output with bleed, trim, spot colours, cut lines and PDF/X-4, cloud or on-premises deployment, and a 30-day trial on request. No price list was found on the site on 20 October 2026.
PitchPrint
PitchPrint is a web-to-print customizer for Shopify and WooCommerce that produces vector PDFs in CMYK or RGB. Its features page describes a page module that adds, swaps and deletes pages for magazines, menus and brochures, a data form for business cards, and an API called Spark that creates print-ready PDFs without opening the editor. The pricing page lists Basic at $29 a month billed annually with 500 free projects a month, Premium at $49 with 750 and Agency at $199, with $0.20 per completed project above the limit and a 14-day Premium trial, as of 20 October 2026.
Printcart
Printcart's apps add its product designer to Shopify, Wix and WooCommerce stores, and its WooCommerce plugin produces print-ready files in PDF, SVG, PNG and JPG CMYK. For books, the Printcart Photobook plugin (in build) turns WooCommerce products into multi-page photo-album designers, where shoppers design the cover, spine, inside covers and interior spreads; it connects to the Printcart Cloud for pricing and print rendering. The store plans start with a Free plan.
What does an editor cost per photobook order?
An editor's cost per photobook order depends on how it counts pages. Printess bills order credits, and its pricing page says one credit covers a document of up to 4 pages, with one more credit for each additional 4 pages, so a 40-page book uses 10 credits. PitchPrint's pricing page counts completed projects above a monthly allowance and does not mention pages.
| Editor and plan | Monthly fee | What one order uses | Extra usage | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printess Small, yearly contract | 29€, 100 credits included | A 40-page book = 10 credits | 40 cents a credit | Printess pricing |
| Printess Medium, monthly contract | 249€, 1,000 credits included | A 40-page book = 10 credits | 30 cents a credit | Printess pricing |
| PitchPrint Basic, billed annually | $29, 500 projects included | 1 project | $0.20 a project | PitchPrint pricing |
| PitchPrint Premium, billed annually | $49, 750 projects included | 1 project | $0.20 a project | PitchPrint pricing |
| Customer's Canvas | Not published | Not published | Not published | Customer's Canvas |
Read the table as an order of magnitude, not a quote: on the Printess Small plan, the included 100 credits cover 10 books of 40 pages a month, and each further book uses 10 overage credits. Printcart's plan prices are on its store-plans page. A business that wants the whole store built can compare the full-store packages, which start at USD 799 a year with the Printcart Premium licence, or start from Printcart's poster and canvas store.

The right editor depends on your team and your products more than on the feature list. A photobook or greeting-card brand with a shop and no developers needs ready templates and a book editor; a company building its own ordering platform needs APIs and deployment options; a print shop selling cards and flyers needs a plugin with predictable monthly pricing. The table maps common situations to the tools whose own pages describe that case.
| Your situation | Editors to look at first | Why, from their own pages |
|---|---|---|
| Photobook, card or calendar brand with an existing shop | Printess, Printcart Photobook (in build) | Printess sells photo books and cards; Printcart Photobook (in build) designs covers, spine and spreads (Printess, WordPress.org) |
| Developer team building its own platform or B2B portal | Customer's Canvas, Printess | APIs, SDKs and on-premises deployment; a headless editor (Customer's Canvas, Printess) |
| Print shop on Shopify or WooCommerce selling stationery | PitchPrint, Printcart | Store plugins with monthly plans or a Free plan (PitchPrint, Printcart) |
| Store that also wants a print-on-demand partner | The partner's own app first | See Printful, Printify, Gelato or your own store |
Whatever you choose, run a trial with your own template and a real order, then open the file: page size, bleed, spine and colour mode must match what your printer expects. The same approach applies to web-to-print software for small print shops.
